Summary: Japanese sadistic prison commander and army sergeant known as "The Bird" who was considered as one of Japan's most notorious prison guards and served at several infamous Japanese POW camps in Omori, Naoetsu, and Mitsushima on an artificial island in Tokyo Bay during World War II, and who after Japan's defeat was classified as Gen. Douglas MacArthur's list of the 40 most-wanted war criminals by the U.S. Occupation authorities for his horrific mistreatment of prisoners of wars (one of Watanabe's prisoners was American track star and Olympic hero Louis Zamperini), but he managed to evade arrest and was never tried in court.
